Tourism, Liguria is confirmed as the capital region of cruises

The Costa Smeralda in Savona

Genoa in second place in the national ranking, Savona in fifth. Many “new entries” in 2022

Genoa – Also 2022 will confirm the Liguria region as the queen of the Italian cruise industry. In fact, the cruise traffic generated by the ports of Genoa, Savona and La Spezia will make it possible to keep the other competitors at a distance.

Making realistic predictions on the final annual result is very difficult as the final trend of the season will be influenced by several factors. First of all, the elimination or not of the capacity limits imposed on cruise ships to avoid crowds on board. In fact, the evolution of the pandemic situation will still greatly affect the rest of the season: but the hope is that the summer can go smoothly allowing ports to fill up with passengers as they did until 2019.

To get an idea of what will be up to the Ligurian ports we can take as a reference the statistics elaborated by Tourism answers which can only be considered an approximation for the reasons mentioned above.

Genoa is placed in second place in the national ranking with an expectation of 950,000 passengers (+ 128% compared to 2021) for 318 ship calls; La Spezia occupies fourth place with 480,000 passengers (+ 345%) with 176 ship calls; Savona occupies fifth place with 400,000 passengers (+ 128%) with 162 ship calls.

Obviously the two large home ports (ie ports of embarkation and disembarkation) remain Genoa and Savona, the first fiefdom of MSC Cruises, the second instead of Costa Cruises. If in Savona the traffic will be almost exclusive to Costa (the Genoese company confirms a total of 142 stopovers with passengers on board, therefore excluding technical stops), the situation under the Lanterna will be different, where we will see several ships of other brands. We remind you that the works of the main mooring of Ponte dei Mille have recently been completed and returned to full operation. Therefore, the 340-meter-long western quay will make it possible to easily accommodate the larger ships arriving at the Superba.

In addition to MSC with its 800,000 passengers in Genoa, Costa Cruises’ stopovers in the city of the company stand out: 44 between Costa Luminosa and especially Costa Firenze. The latter is one of the most recent ships of the company which was delivered at the end of 2020 by Fincantieri. The positioning of a ship like this represents Costa’s renewed interest in Genoa (confirmed by the announcement for 2023 for the positioning of Costa Toscana). On the other hand, the list of MSC Cruises ships that will touch Genoa 220 times is monstrous: Grandiosa, Lirica, Magnifica, Meraviglia, Opera, Orchestra, Poesia, Preziosa, Seaside, Seaview, Splendida and finally Virtuosa.

Among the “foreign” companies there are several stops of Princess Cruises’ Regal Princess. The Love Boat company’s bond with Genoa is close given that Gioco Viaggi, the exclusive agent for Italy of the Carnival Corporation premium brand, is based in the city. Also worth noting is the return of Royal Caribbean International with the vecchtheto Rhapsody of the Seas on a couple of occasions and then Marina by Oceania Cruises and even the elegant Queen Elizabeth by Cunard Line.

Among the foreign companies that will touch Liguria we must remember Phoenix Seereisen that with its load of German tourists will unexpectedly climb to Savona, while the other “foreign” companies will opt for La Spezia, port for the Cinque Terre and also for excursions to Florence for the joy of American tourists. Here she will also climb Royal Caribbean International’s incredible Wonder of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world. But given that there is still talk of traffic in the vicinity for 2022, it will be essential for Genoa and Savona to attract tourists from the nearest markets.
